This small ivory sculpture portrays the head of the Roman emperor Constantine I, the Great (307-337 AD).

Constantine, whose mother was a devout Christian, was the first roman emperor to legalize and even endorse Christianity. After defeating his rival Licinius, who had control of the Eastern Roman Empire, he rebuilt the ancient city of Byzantium, which he renamed ‘New Rome’. His successors renamed it Constantinople in his honor, and it remained so until the Turks renamed it Istanbul in 1453.
